Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

In search of brave and faithful supporters to join the Knights of the Round Table, the legendary British leader, King Arthur of Camelot, rides around Britain's countryside atop his noble steed. Before long, a handful of good men answer his call; however, after careful consideration, they decide to go their separate ways only to provoke the wrath of the omnipotent being in the clouds, who commands Arthur and his followers to find the fabled Holy Grail. Now, on a mission from God himself, five men must brave taunting French soldiers; confront sexually obsessed virgins; do battle with the notorious Black Knight; face a mysterious enchanter named Tim the Enchanter, killer rabbits and lessons in the use of holy hand grenades. But, are King Arthur's knights up to the task? Holy Grail has to be one of the funniest films ever made, which is up there with
Airplane! (1980) as the best comedy movie out there in my opinion. It is an excellently well-made comedy and shows the absolute brilliance of the Monty Python members as they went on to bring us so much hilarious content over the years. Holy Grail has to be my favourite out of all the Monty Python movies. The latter two films are equally entertaining with their side-splitting humour, but I think this one will always have a special place in my heart. There are just so many lines and scenes that will have you laughing for hours on end and not only that but visual and background gags, comedic characters, weird and wacky sets and a mad story to complete it. My favourite scene in the whole film has to be the Black Knight scene in which King Arthur faces off against the brave sir knight. Despite Arthur cutting off his arm and assuming the battle is won, the knight continues to fight back claiming: 'tis but a scratch' and keeps on going. His persistence leads to him getting his other arm chopped off which he still fights back. After not conceding still and kicking Arthur relentlessly, both his legs go as well, yet he still tries to take him on. It is absolutely brilliant and a very iconic scene that is easily the most memorable joke in the film. I even have it on a t-shirt, which is one of my favourite items of clothing I own. Another iconic part, and a favourite moment of mine, is the holy hand grenade that they use against the deadly fierce beast, the killer rabbit. Yes, you read that right, and it sounds like the most absurd thing to ever happen in a movie, which it is and that's why I love it so much. The holy hand grenade is even referenced in other projects like Ready Player One (2018) where it is used by the main character in a big battle. Alongside all the wacky moments, there are a few musical numbers that will generate some chuckles like the Camelot: Knights of the Round Table song, which is extremely catchy and entertaining as they display some farcical imagery and dancing in the background. I also love how they include some phenomenal animated sequences into the mix, from bizarre beasts who chase our heroic protagonists to even God himself in the clouds, giving Arthur his quest for the grail. It is so cool we get to see that recognisable Monty Python artistry and drawings brought into their movies in such creative and hysterical ways. There are so many phenomenal bits I could go on and on but it is so much better to see them first-hand in this film. All of this wouldn't have been possible without the brains behind the production and those who delivered these lines/scenes. A big shout out to them all for creating this magnificent form of endless entertainment that will never grow old, still being found by new generations today for the first time. Overall, this is just a fabulously funny film that is a testament to the Monty Python team in their amazing ability to create some of the best comedy known to man, this film is sheer perfection. A must-see cult classic that has heavily influenced and shaped pop culture history. For more hilarious antics from the Monty Python crew, why not check out their next instalment in Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979), which brings just as many laughs.
