Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Ferris Bueller has an uncanny skill at cutting classes and getting away with it. Intending to make one last duck-out before graduation, Ferris calls in sick and goes out into the streets of Chicago with his friend Cameron and girlfriend Sloane. Ferris "borrows" Cameron's dad's Ferrari, and embarks on a one-day journey getting into loads of mischief and adventures, doing whatever they please. On Ferris' trail is high school principal Rooney, who is determined to catch him in the act. This is an all-time classic film and a huge favourite of mine. It's a lot of fun, comedic, and its from the 80's, which is my favourite period for everything, from film, TV, music, and more. This film always reminds me of summertime when I first watched it. The movie has such a happy, fun vibe that will always bring a smile to my face, with its overflowing comedic jokes and sequences with some witty, hilarious deliveries. All the music in this film are some fabulous choices that are certain to get you in the dancing spirit and I have linked them down below with Spotify. There are so many songs that are just as iconic and memorable as the movie, from 'Twist and Shout' by the Beatles to 'Oh Yeah' by Yello, each song will have you moving along. There are many great references to other outstanding movies present throughout like, for example, Ferris describing his "illness" to other students as feeling as bad as when "That creature was in that guy's stomach", which is the chestburster scene from Alien (1979)Another great reference is when Cameron's dad's Ferrari flies over the road to the opening theme of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)This movie will have you grinning throughout with its amazing quips, quotes, visual gags, and even through the credits right to the very end with an after-credit scene. Ferris even has a great and memorable quote that everybody can take and learn from: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it". Such an iconic line. I adored each of the characters in the movie as they are so hilarious, charming and simply great friends. We as the audience, also feel included as they go on their adventures and feel like we are joining in on their fun. Ferris and his friends get up to a lot of exciting mischief on their adventure. From Ferris taking centre stage of a parade float and singing to the massive crowd, to seeing them explore Chicago in restaurants and museums, they get into all sorts of situations. They end up constantly evading Ferris' parents on their travels, who tend to show up very close to where they are hanging out. Meanwhile, Rooney is frequently attempting to catch Ferris in the act, even by breaking into his house! Ferris and Cameron's interactions are extremely comedic, especially when Cameron calls up principal Rooney, pretending to be Sloane's father, so to try and get her out of school. It is my favourite scene because Rooney thinks it is Ferris and starts mocking him until Ferris calls up, making him think he has insulted Sloane's actual father. Rooney's reaction matched with Cameron's responses and deliveries never cease to crack me up. Everyone also knows the iconic scene of Ferris running through people's back gardens as he races home before his parents find out he's not there, which is just hilarious and referenced in other films like Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Seeing him interact with people as he runs in their gardens, jogging alongside his unaware dad in his car and using someone's trampoline to jump over the fence to get home are all fabulous moments making up a brilliant scene. Directed by the brilliant John Hughes, Ferris Bueller is easily one of my favourites he has created and he has brought us so many comedic, fun classics that I and so many others love from The Breakfast Club (1985) to Home Alone (1990). Overall, this is my go-to happy film with so many comedic scenes, enjoyable characters and some important messages. Ferris Bueller's Day Off is everything I enjoy and love about the 80s and so much more. It is one of those movie experiences that is certain to keep you smiling with all of its entertaining qualities.
