A ruthless crime family calling themselves the Fratellis have somehow escaped from jail and are now hiding in the town of Astoria, Oregon. Home of a secret kid society known as The Goonies, their leader is Michael "Mikey" Walsh, and they are enjoying their last weekend together as a system of contractors have bought their neighbourhood and are considering transforming it into a golf course. However, Mikey stumbles upon a mysterious map to a treasure of a famed pirate One-Eyed Willie. So, The Goonies embark on an adventure to find the treasure and save their neighbourhood. However, they also came across the Fratellis. So, the Goonies have to stay one step ahead of the Fratellis and find the treasure while avoiding a system of traps. The Goonies is not only a true 80s classic but also one of the most beloved films ever. This feature will always be one of my all-time favourites when it comes to the 1980s. It has so much charm, comedy and amazing acting, there is not one single character I dislike at all. When I think of this film I am instantly hit with nostalgia and happy memories. It is a movie I can rely on to put me in a good mood, instantly making me smile. I love the whole plot of this story, mainly for its originality. I mean what doesn't sound more exciting and charming than some children trying to save their home by following a treasure map to some long-lost fortune from a 17th-century pirate? It's because of these kinds of new and delightful stories that I fell in love with the 80s. The Goonies cast steals the show with their hilarious banter, great gimmicks, characteristics and the bond/true sense of friendship they share with one another. Mikey, Brand, Chunk, Mouth, Data, Andy, and Stef are all enjoyable main characters. Each of the team plays a key part in getting past the many booby traps and puzzles they encounter, which shows their skills and it was so nice to see them work as a team to overcome the dangers, including the ever-nearing Fratellis. Their friendship with one another will always be iconic and you can't help but smile whenever they are together, making jokes and goofing around. The actor of Mikey, Sean Astin, would go on to act in big roles years later with my favourite being The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, in which I had no idea for a long time that he played Sam. I somehow never noticed it was the same guy till years later, which was a nice surprise. He would even go on to star in the second season of Stranger Things (TV Series 2016-2022), which is a supernatural show set during the 1980s. The Fratellis are also great characters and extremely entertaining whilst also being menacing and can be very terrifying. I love the interactions they have together, constantly bickering but their best scenes involve interrogating Chunk. Just utterly hilarious. Another integral character is Sloth who Chunk finds and rescues from his imprisonment by the Fratellis who kept him locked up. The two create a really sweet bond and are a great duo with some emotional scenes together. Despite his unfortunate appearance/disfigurement, he is really kind and a great help to the children, saving them from the clutches of the Fratellis with some swashbuckling action aboard the pirate ship. He even helps get them out of the dangerous cave to safety. Also, who could forget that iconic scene where he yells, "Hey you guys!" before swiftly coming to save the day as a pirate? The sets used in this film, alongside the special effects, are outstanding, bringing this film to life. This is especially the case when joined with the magnificent score composed by Dave Gruisin. Overall, this is a must-see for all 80s fans, especially for general moviegoers. It has so much to enjoy with the engaging adventure, comedic moments, a little bit of romance, suspense and some invigorating action. I think it might even have to be the best 80s movie ever. Well, at least up there in my top 5. It's a pop culture classic that is sure to make you smile and laugh. It is one for the whole family to fall in love with. Make sure to add this phenomenal adventure flick to your watch list!
